Author name: Coach Harmon

I’m not real big into talking about myself but apparently some people like to know this stuff so here goes: About Coach - Todd Harmon I am Todd Harmon, a passionate basketball coach with over 12 years of experience working with youth, middle school, and high school athletes. I am also a proud father to two teenage boys and have been happily married to my wife Erika for over 25years. Family is at the core of who I am, and I strive to bring that same sense of community to my coaching. My Basketball Journey Basketball has been a lifelong passion of mine ever since I attended Pat Riley’s Lakers basketball camp as a teenager. There, I had the immense privilege of learning from legendary players and coaches like Pat Riley, AC Green, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I also had the unique opportunity during high school to host an NBA player in my family’s home for several months. He became an invaluable mentor, bringing me to games and practices to immerse me in the daily life of a professional athlete. These formative experiences instilled in me a deep love for and understanding of basketball. Coaching Background I helped revive Lightning Basketball Club after the pandemic along with our club President Peter Chavez. As Director of the Colorado Lighting Peter and I have grown the club from 6 teams to over 15 teams with 100+ players. Last year, 13 graduating seniors received offers to play at the college level. For the past 10 years I have coach year-round, over 100-200 games and 150+ hours of practices annually. Before Lightning I gained experience with two other top Denver clubs. Lightning is my home because of our mission to develop young athletes physically, mentally and spiritually. Coaching Approach My coaching philosophy centers on cultivating intuition, fluidity, and fast strategic thinking. We employ a motion offense rather than set plays so that athletes learn to make decisions in the moment and understand spatial dynamics on the court. This style, though difficult to master, yields remarkably quick, adaptive players with sharp basketball IQs. My own athletic training in various martial arts over the past decades also gives me unique insight into injury prevention, movement mechanics, and sports performance that I integrate into coaching. I am dedicated to continuously improving as a coach. I read several coaching books every year, focusing on authors like Brian McCormick. I also attend clinics annually to further develop my knowledge. I am a Positive Coaching Alliance certified coach as well as a USA Basketball Gold Licensed coach. I look forward to continuing to foster excellence, leadership, faith and love of the game in Lightning athletes for years to come!
